PRESS RELEASE: MARCH 2, 2011 Roman Pérez Announces Candidacy for City Commission District 1After conducting a listening tour of Southmost, Roman Pérez, 32, gathered over one hundred signatures to appear on the ballot this May. Pérez asserted, "The time for leadership is now. The time for civility is now. The time for honest talk is now. The time for change is now." "I love Southmost. I love Brownsville. I live here raising my family because I believe in us and this city. Just like you, I want what is best for Southmost. Representing Southmost should not be a consolation prize. I believe I am best prepared to represent District 1, our home, over the next four years. I know what it's like to deal with City Hall and get things done, like fighting for better streets. I'm ready to hit the ground running to do what is right for Southmost. I will be your voice that Southmost needs on our city commission," declared Pérez. Pérez will be using the campaign slogan of "Smart Ideas. Smart Solutions." The District 1 city commission candidate went on to say, "I have listened and agree with my fellow District 1 voters. We want a lower PUB bill, more public safety, and better streets. Our PUB bills are too high. The more the city spends on unnecessary things, the more our PUB bill goes up. Southmost cannot afford this. We need more public safety. The city must use our money wisely for real things like hiring more police officers and better patrol cars and ambulances. Many of our streets are in bad shape. They need to be our top priority. Many neighborhood streets also need speed humps. City work crews need to stay longer in Southmost." Pérez firmly believes, "It's the simple things people need from any city commission: streets that do not tear their cars up, storm water that drains properly, and enough police and firefighters to feel safe." His candidacy is a call for listening, unity, and action. In keeping with this commitment if elected, Pérez promises to hold a much needed Southmost townhall meeting by December 31, 2011. Pérez pledged, "Every district household with a voice will be invited. It's a call to action. If Southmost is going to grow, we need to grow together and let everyone in our city know our needs for prosperity. If voters and residents show up in good numbers, then Southmost will not be ignored. I may not fix everything, but together we can and will make a difference." Pérez is a Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 and a master's degree in 2005. He lives in Southmost with his wife and daughter. |
